How To Remove Fleas Outside 4 Steps

It’s important to learn how to remove fleas outside, so that you don’t have fleas coming back into your house.

Your pets, kids and you can bring the fleas back inside your home. The outside areas of your home need to be treated to protect yourself, pets and family against fleas.

Even if you don’t have any pets that go in and out throughout the day that doesn’t mean that you can’t get fleas in your home.

Fleas will attach to a host, including humans and get a ride into the safety of the indoors where they can lay their eggs without you even knowing it. You may think that if you have a really clean house that fleas won’t survive, that is not true.

Remove Fleas Outside To Kill The Flea Life Cycle

All four stages of the flea life cycle will survive in both clean and dirty environments very easily as long as they have a host to feed them. Learn more about the flea life cycle here.

If you have signs of fleas in your yard it’s very important to treat it immediately and it would be really helpful to take precautionary steps inside your home as will to prevent an infestation.

At this point you should have treated your pets and the inside of your home for fleas.  If you still need to do this, please follow the links below, you will find step by step instructions to complete the process for a flea free environment.

Complete The Following Steps For Outside Flea Removal:

Step 1.  How To Remove Fleas Outside – Cleaning Your Yard

Before starting your outside flea removal, you need to be aware of any debris that’s just sitting in yard.

If you have any leaf piles, grass piles or garbage just sitting in your yard, you will need to get all of it cleaned up and disposed of properly.

Fleas like sandy areas as well, hence “sand fleas”, if you have a sandy yard you will be treating this as well so make sure it’s free of any debris.

Fleas will hide and breed in areas that are sandy, full of leaves or brush along with bushes and flower beds.

Step 2.  How To Remove Fleas Outside – Cutting Your Lawn & Weed Eating

Cutting your grass, including weed eating areas around your home will help the outdoor flea spray penetrate to the lowest part of the ground ensuring complete saturation of the flea control.

Step 3. How To Remove Fleas Outside – Using An Outside Flea Spray

There are many varieties of insecticides to choose from, so make sure that the package specifically says that it kills fleas, flea eggs, flea larvae & flea pupae.

You want to make sure that when you’re treating the outside of your home, all of the fleas life cycle stages are being killed.

I personally use Wondercide and had excellent results with it.  The price is definitely well worth the amount of product you get.

It’s bought in concentrated form so when diluted, per instructions, you have enough to treat the inside and outside of your home a few times.

After reading the directions on the outdoor flea spray, you are going to spray any and all areas that your pet(s) spend their time outside.  You’ll also want to spray any sandy and/or dirt areas of your yard. If you don’t have pets and have seen signs of fleas or have noticed bites on yourself, be sure to spray the entire yard including the edging.

To Remove Fleas Outside Pay Attention To Damp, Warm, Sandy Patches

Fleas reproduce very well in damp, warm, sandy dirt patch areas be sure to check your yard for any areas like this. You should look around garages, sheds, etc..

Even if your pet doesn’t spend much time in the sandy, dirt patches of your yard, you’ll want to treat them anyway as part of the outside flea removal.  The fleas and their varying stages of life, can attach themselves to people and be brought into the home on your clothing and shoes.

Warm sandy areas are a great place for fleas to reproduce due to the moisture and the heat that the sandy dirt holds.

Using Diatomaceous Earth To Remove Fleas Outside:

Make sure that you are using “food grade” Diatomaceous earth, sprinkle it liberally around your yard, focusing on the areas that you’ve noticed flea activity and areas that your pets like to be in. Don’t forget to put the DE in shady, damp areas of your yard, fleas love these areas!

Watch the following video to learn more about how Diatomaceous Earth works:

If you have a rainy patch of weather the DE will need to be reapplied outside because it is all natural, there is no chemical residue left behind after the rain.

When Combining the DE and the outdoor flea spray, you have a much stronger defence against the fleas and infestations. Even if the DE is washed away you will have the residue of the flea spray left to continue killing the fleas and their life stages.

Where can I buy this Diatomaceous Earth, and how much does it cost? I live in Meridian, Ms. Thank you.

    1. Kimberly

Hello MayDell, I added a link for you on the “outside flea removal” page. It will take you to Amazon, that’s were I buy it. Its’ very inexpensive, about $10 average for a 10lb bag, (a little bit goes a long way). I believe you could also find it at a Lowes or Home Depot but to be honest I’ve never looked for it there. Please let me know if you need any more help! Have a great day 🙂

  2. I live in nz and I can’t seem to find any De and I’m not allowed to do any online shopping plus buying sprays for outdoors is pricy. What should I do?

    1. Kimberly

Hello Orio, You should be able to find DE in your local area. I’m not sure if you have an Agway or a Tractors Supplies Plus store in your area but anywhere where you could buy pesticides, plant, flowers and soil will most likely have DE available or could order it for you. I buy mine right from Amazon and get it in 2 days. The prices are great and you can order the size that will fit your needs. Here’s a link to DE through Amazon:

  3. Is DE harmful to wildlife? I get a lot of squirrels, chipmunks, possums and birds in my yard and do not want to use anything that would poison them. I do not use any type of weed killers, lawn products in my yard for that reason. And more importantly, my cat likes to be out and I don’t want her getting sick. But I do have a flea problem and need to treat outside in order to help eliminate them coming in with her.

    1. Kimberly

Hello Anne, Diatomaceous Earth is not harmful to animals or humans. It is all natural actually it is the shell remains of sea dwelling algae and is found at the bottom of the ocean floors. I actually just had someone leave me a comment saying that the DE didn’t work for them inside of their home so I’m not sure if it will be completely effective for you. I would recommend Wondercide Outdoor Spray. This product is amazing and is 100% natural and safe for animals and people.

Best of luck with your flea removal,

      Kimberly 🙂

    1. Kimberly

      Hello Sara,

Yes, if it rains you will need to reapply the DE when you have a dry spell. You may want to give Wondercide Organic Spray a try, it is very effective without the harsh chemicals many of the outdoor sprays are made of. This works tremendously well also.

  7. Cynthia

Does rain kill fleas? We have been having rain almost every other week, I really would hate to be wasting spray if the rain just washing it away.

    1. Kimberly

      Hello Cynthia,

Rain could kill the fleas, they will drown in water but they can hide easily away from the rain. If rain killed fleas outside then many of us wouldn’t have flea problems outside. Keep using your outdoor treatment to control any flea problems!

Best of luck and please let me know if I can help you any further 🙂
