You will need to kill fleas in your home to prevent a total infestation if you have seen them. Only treating your pets and not the inside and outside of your home, can result in a total infestation.

Kill Fleas In Your Home

If you don’t have pets but still find that you have fleas skip to treating your carpet for fleas.

Follow all the steps for home flea removal the first time so you don’t have a repeated infestation of fleas.

Although the steps for home flea removal may seem daunting. I promise, you will be grateful you did all the steps the first time.

Kill Fleas In Your Home Use These 7 Easy Steps

Step 1: Get Rid Of Fleas On Your Pets
Step 2: Treat Your Carpet For Fleas
Step 3: Treat Your Furniture For Fleas
Step 4: Use A Flea Fogger To Kill Fleas In Hard To Reach Places
Step 5: Wash Everything To Kill Fleas & All Their Stages
Step 6: Vacuum Everything You Can To Remove Fleas
Step 7: Mop Everything You Can To Kill All Stages Of The Flea Life Cycle

Don’t skip any of these steps if you have or want to prevent a flea infestation. Fleas have 4 steps in their life cycle and you want to kill all of them with these 7 steps.

Fleas are very resilient and can hide easily in your home.  Consequently, if you don’t start home flea removal as soon as you realize that fleas are in your home, you will end up with a flea infestation problem!

Although, you may not want to believe that fleas survive in the winter, on the contrary they do. They can live through all seasons.  During colder months a flea can live very happily in your home where it’s heated.

Alternatively, even if there isn’t a host around for a flea to feed upon, they will go into hibernation mode until a host is near. in fact, the host could be you or your pets, they aren’t picky.

Additionally if you think or know you have fleas in your home it would be a very good idea to follow all of these steps to prevent a horrible infestation.

Step 1:  Kill Fleas In Your Home – Get Rid Of Fleas On Your Pets

First and foremost you need to treat your pets for fleas. However, if you don’t have pets but still have fleas, start with step 2, treating your carpets for fleas.

Choose a link below and follow the directions on how to get rid of fleas on your pets. I have step by step instructions to do this.

In addition to treating your pets, continue following steps 2-7 for home flea removal.

To get rid of fleas on your pets naturally:

There are many ways that you can get rid of the fleas on your pets without harsh chemicals.

You can choose homemade flea remedies that are made mostly of all natural ingredients or natural flea killers that don’t contain toxins.

Take a look at the pages below for more information about these options.

Step 2:  Kill Fleas In Your Home – Treating Your Carpets For Fleas:

Carpets will need to be treated with a carpet spray or powder that specifically targets fleas. Do you have a complete infestation? Use both the flea spray with the flea powder to target and kill and infestation.

Use the carpet flea killer spray first to kill adult fleas instantly.

Next, cover your carpets completely with a carpet flea powder after the spray to smother the other stages of the flea life cycle and any remaining adult fleas.

These are the two flea products that I would recommend for flea control on your carpets. Use one that you prefer if you don’t like what I use, just make sure it’s for fleas.

Fleas love warm, moist, dark places, be sure to move any furniture on your carpets and spray under them. The more efficient you are with covering all areas of your rugs with the flea powder or spray, the more effective the treatment will be.

This is a very effective step with home flea removal that will only take your time and about $50, depending on the amount of carpets in your home.

Leave both the flea spray and powder on your carpets while treating furniture this allows plenty of time for them to do their job effectively.

Step 3:  Kill Fleas In Your Home – Treating Your Furniture For Fleas

Moving on to your furniture. It doesn’t matter if your pets go on your furniture or not, fleas jump and have no doubt hitched a ride on you for a comfy place to settle.

All of your furniture will need to be treated with a flea furniture spray.  Fleas will hide in furniture stuffing, be sure to saturate this as well.

I recommend Cedarcide original bug spray to kill fleas in furniture, it works. It’s safe for both your pets and furniture, additionally, the scent is fresh and clean.

Before using a furniture spray vacuum it thoroughly so that the spray gets the fleas and all of its stages without dust and dirt debri getting in the way.

All of the flea stages will settle deep into your furniture stuffing, when you vacuum it will pull them up closer to the surface allowing the furniture spray to be more effective.

Check a small area of your furniture

that is not noticeable and spray the flea furniture spray. Wait an hour to make sure that it doesn’t discolor the fabric before spraying completely.

Do you have a furniture cover?

If you do, take that off and wash it in the highest water temperature that you can and dry on the hottest temperature as well.

When the vacuuming is done and the furniture covers are washed, thoroughly spray your furniture with the flea spray.

Lift or remove the cushions from your furniture and spray all sides of them.

Spray the bottom of the furniture, where the cushions set, along with the armrests, sides and both the front and back of the furniture.

After you are done spraying all the furniture let it dry for a few hours before replacing the cushions.

Step 4:  Kill Fleas In Your Home – Using A Flea Fogger To Kill Fleas:

You will need a flea fogger to reach the tiniest spots in your home that you can’t see.  In other words, flea eggs are the size of a grain of salt, and the larvae and pupa stages can hide anywhere.

There are so many cracks and crevices in our homes that we can’t see were fleas can hide. Especially the egg, larvae and pupae stages of the flea.

These stages hide well because they are very hard to spot with the human eye.

In conclusion, a flea fogger reaches all of those spots we can’t see and kills those hard to find stages of the fleas.

Are you against using any chemicals

or can’t due to health reasons? A great alternative to reaching hard to reach areas of your home is either diatomaceous earth and table salt.

Step 5:  Kill Fleas In Your Home – Washing Everything For Home Flea Removal:

Above all other things, you’ll need to wash all bedding, linens anything and everything that is washable.

If your pets have toys that are made out of cotton type materials, wash them. As long as it is made of a fibrous material, it can have flea stages on it.

However, if the pets toys are rubber or plastic, just rinse in hot soapy water.

If it’s not possible to wash your pets toy, put it in boiling hot water and make sure it is fully submerged, this will kill the fleas as well.

Do not skip this step during your home flea removal, you will find the fleas again within a week.

Your pets will continue sleeping on their beds and playing with their toys ultimately scattering the flea eggs again throughout your home!

Wash all the bedding in hot soapy water.  I use borax with my laundry detergent to wash everything including the pets bedding. I know that it’s safe and it kills fleas.

Next, dry everything you can on high heat, in your dryer.  This is an extra effective process in killing all the flea stages.

If you can’t wash something that your pet uses, like a pet bed, just throw it out and buy a new one or steam clean it.

Step 6:  Kill Fleas In Your Home – Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum!

Vacuum all of your carpets extremely thoroughly.  Be sure to get all the nooks and crannies with your vacuum, remember fleas like dark places, so be sure to move furniture and vacuum under it.

I have sprayed flea spray directly in my vacuum canister and have also used flea powder in it before starting the vacuum process. If any of the flea stages are alive while doing this step they will die.

After you are done vacuuming, empty the canister into the garbage and throw the bag in your garbage bin outside.

Also, you will want to wash the canister out along with the washable filters to your vacuum if you have them.

Take a Look at What Vacuuming Will Do For Your Flea Problem

Going over your carpet a few times is a very good idea,  as the larvae stage of the flea has a sticky outer coating, that makes it easy for it to stay deep in your carpet fibers.

Again, i can’t stress enough how important it is to vacuum thoroughly! This includes your furniture, floors, mattresses and your tile or wood floors.

Step 7:  Kill Fleas In Your Home – Mopping All Of Your Floors To Get Rid Of Fleas

The final step in home flea removal is mopping all of the floors that aren’t carpeted. This includes, kitchen, bathrooms, hardwood and tile flooring.

It’s very important to reach all of the corners thoroughly along with rinsing the mop very often.

Make sure that you use the hottest water that you can. Adding vinegar, bleach or your flea spray to the water will help with killing the fleas and getting them off the flours.

Fleas don’t like wood and tile because they’re cooler surfaces.  However, the egg stage and larvae stage can fall from you or your pet when travelling through your home.

If you have a floor steam cleaner this is very effective as well.  The steam cleaner will kill the flea stages on contact because it is so hot, while the pad will pull them off the floor.

In Conclusion Of How To Get Rid Of Fleas In Your Home – 7 Easy Steps

is completed. You did it!!!  Your home is well on its way to being flea free.  Now to keep your home flea free and to keep your pet protected use a monthly flea treatment  or an alternative natural flea treatment.

You should repeat the previous steps weekly, except the vacuuming, this should be done daily. It is highly possible to have some of the fleas and their stages still alive. If you stay ahead of them and use these steps as a preventative measure you should stay flea free.

Also, if you see any fleas, repeat the steps necessary for the areas that you do see them. In other words, if you see them on your furniture, vacuum and spray it again.

If it’s a warmer climate where you are, I highly recommend treating the outside of your home as well. Fleas live very well outside when it’s warm.

I hope that you have finally gotten a flea free home with the above information. If you have tried anything else that has been effective, please share below to help others.

  1. Adopted a 2 kittens and one cam home with fleas as we were told they both had a flea bath. Kittens were in one room on house for one week to acclimate to house. Gave them access to house on Sunday night July 30th. Took to vet for follow up shots on Aug 4th and vet saw live flea. From what I read it takes flea eggs 16 days or so to become an adult flea. I have been vacuuming and cleaning and Friday night used the water with soap in a low sided dish and a light and placed on the floor to catch fleas. next morning I did not see any fleas in dish. Also while cleaning I have not seen any adult fleas. Oh yes, I did treat the kittens and my other cat and dog with a frontline type topical flea and tick killer. So now that the pets are treated are they considered a walking flea killer? Also, since I believe I caught this somewhat early how crazy do I need to go. I have read so many horror stories and I do not want to be come one of them. We have been cleaning house top to bottom all weekend and I purchased Vet’s Best Flea and Tick home spray seems to be made from plant based formula and says kills adult fleas and eggs, nothing about larva and such. So am I on the right track or am I over killing this. One other item my vet said I did not have to bomb my house with a flogger. That the life cycle would die out as the flea once back on the pet would bite pet and die as they are now treated. Please help.

    1. Hi there Bill, if you have treated your pets with a topical flea treatment and you’re not seeing any other fleas at this time I would say that yes, you have probably caught the problem before it gets crazy out of control. Your vet is right, the fleas will die when jumping onto your pets and biting them.

I would just keep a watchful eye on your pets and yourselves for the fleas. If you do see them, I would spray the area that you see them in. I would think that you are probably out of the woods as far as an infestation goes.

Just keep treating your pets with a monthly flea medication as a precautionary measure.

Best of luck with your new additions & please let me know if I can help you any further!

      1. Thanks for the advice. We are keeping up with vacuuming and watching pets. Hope we do not see those buggers any more. Positive note our house is really clean now LOL.

      1. Thank you! I have four cats and they all are infested with fleas. They have been staying in the basement until I can get the issue resolved but I keep finding fleas upstairs in the carpets.Probably because I am tracking them upstairs when I come from the basement. I have tried other remedies but they haven’t worked. My basement is cement and the fleas are all over. Would the home spray work for the cement floor as well?

        1. Hi there Unissa, Yes, the Wondercide Home Spray should work down there as well. You should start to see a huge difference as soon as you treat your cats with the Wondercide as well. I’d spray all my carpets, furniture and bedding along with mopping my floors with the wondercide as well. You most likely have flea eggs and larvae in your carpets just waiting to hatch. Any bedding, blankets and furniture covers that are washable in the washing machine, I would wash them in hot water and dry on the hottest cycle you can. This will kill the fleas and their life stages effectively. Also be sure to vacuum all the furniture and flooring everyday!! Empty the bags or canisters every time you do to get the fleas out of the house.

Best of luck and please let me know if I can help you with anything else 🙂

  3. I have fleas in my house but I don’t own any pets though. The fleas are tiny and they like to jump around. I’ve used the Raid Fleas Spray to spray all over my house and mopped the floor. But I still see tiny fleas around my house. Could you help me ?

    1. Hello Sandy, it’s possible to have fleas even without pets. The fleas could be outside in the yard or if you have a dirt basement they can live there as well, they can spread through your home very quickly so I’d recommend following the steps on the page Home Flea Removal I would use Wondercide to treat your home for the fleas, this is all natural and works extremely well, just follow the directions on the package to treat your home and you should see a huge improvement in only a day!!

Best of luck and please let me know if I can help you any further 🙂

  4. I really do like this article about how to get rid of fleas in your house. The step by step tips on how to remove them like take care of the dog, then move to the carpet is smart. I think I would feel better by having professionals come and get rid of them correctly.

  5. We have NO pets, but somehow have been invaded by very tiny fleas that just love my ankles and feet. We are in south Texas. Most of our floors are bare (wood laminate or vinyl tile). I have washed small throw rugs and sprayed all of them with insecticide, including the larger area rugs that I can’t wash. We leave for our summer home back north in about 10 days. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi there Dee, I would recommend Wondercide to spray everything in your home, including mattresses, furniture and any of the throw carpets you are leaving behind. I would also take this and mop your floors with it at full strength. This is an all natural product that has excellent results killing adult fleas along with the egg and larvae stages. It smells good so when you return to your home after your summer vacation your home won’t have a strong chemical smell to it. This is safe to use without the worry of strong chemicals lingering in the air.

Hope you have a wonderful summer vacation 🙂

  6. I’ve been doing all the above steps for 20 days, and still fleas! I’ve been vacuuming daily, washing toys and bedding, mopping weekly, as well as flea combing when I can. And i’m about to go back to school, which means it’ll be hard for me to vacuum every day. I’ve ordered wondercide spray online, but as I live in Australia, it’ll probably be weeks before it gets here. What am I doing wrong? Is it because I’m not treating the floors right? I really don’t want to use flea bombs in the house, but that might be the only option? Suggestions?

    1. Hello Sophie, have you treated your pets for the fleas? Bathing them with a flea shampoo or just using the flea comb? If your pets aren’t treated it’s impossible to get them out of your home. The fleas will just keep reproducing on your pets. You can get a topical flea treatment at your local pet stores along with a flea shampoo to treat your pets. I don’t know if you have dogs/puppies or cats/kittens. Can you give me a little more information about what pets you have that have the fleas?

      Thank you,

      Kimberly

      1. I have one two year old dog, I treated her first with Frontline which just didn’t work, so my vet recommended to switch to comfortis, which she is now on. It was effective, and the amount of fleas I noticed on her dropped considerably. But they are still there after three weeks of house flea treatment and I am starting to worry!

        1. Hello Sophie, thank you for letting me know. The flea life cycle consists of the adult flea, eggs, larvae and pupae stages, sounds like you have a complete infestation. It’s going to take a month or more to see the fleas completely gone in your home and on your dog. You said previously that you ordered the Wondercide already which will help you get the infestation under control and to get rid of all the adult fleas and the life stages of the flea.

While your waiting for the Wondercide I would recommend steam cleaning your carpets and furniture along with your floors. The heat will kill fleas and it’s life stages but if they are still on your dog then the cylce will continue. Try bathing her and letting her sit in the water so that the fleas are drowned, when she’s in the water you should see the fleas coming out around her face or jumping off onto you trying to survive. Just take your hand and wipe them off her face and back into the water.

When you get the wondercide spray it right on her and comb it right down to her skin along with spraying all of your furniture, curtains and floors. I would put the Wondercide in the steam cleaner in place of regular cleaning solution and steam clean all of my furniture, floors and carpets with it. Between the heat and the Wondercide you should see an immediate improvement in the infestation.

If you haven’t already, consider treating your yard for fleas if you can. This could be where she is picking them back up and bringing them into the house. Best of luck I know how frustrating this has to be for you, just be patient, when the Wondercide gets there you will see a huge improvement!!

Let me know if I can help you any further 🙂

  7. I have fleas in my basement and I also have a van seat down there in the basement and I need to get rid of the fleas asap so I can sleep in my room. Please I need help with this.

    1. Hello Joseph, you can use Wondercide to get rid of the fleas. If you have a dirt basement use the Wondercide for Outdoors. If you have a finished basement use the Wondercide for Indoors. The Wondercide for indoors can be sprayed directly on furniture, carpets, all types of flooring along with bedding. If you have pets spray the Wondercide directly on them and brush down to the skin. It will kill all the fleas and the flea stages immediately. Mop your floors with this as well. Make sure to vacuum any furniture and carpets 24 hours after spraying it with the Wondercide so that you get rid of the dead the fleas. Do this every few days until you don’t see anymore fleas, usually within a week. If you spray this on your pets you can continue to use this monthly as a flea preventative measure. This is an all natural product so you don’t have to worry about any harsh chemicals in your home!

Best of luck to you and please let me know if I can help you any further 🙂

      Kimberly

    2. Since it’s a basement, it might be worth trying this:

Seal up any cracks where air can escape the basement
Ensure the house above the basement is well ventilated
Buy several pounds of dry ice
Leave the dry ice in a bucket at the top of the basement stairs
As the dry ice heats and turns into CO2 gas, this will sink to the basement floor, filling it up from the bottom.
DO NOT go into the basement as the air will be 100% toxic to life

After 3 days, the basement should be 100% free of life- this includes the flea larvae and eggs

Alternatively, purchase/hire a dehumidifier. The aim is to keep the humidity below 40%, which will kill everything except the eggs.

  8. We have sprayed permethrin 2 full bottles, had a professional come spray and fog two times, and I have vacuumed so much I think we may need to buy a new one. And we still have fleas!!!! Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Susan

    1. Hello Susan, Have you tried Wondercide? This is an all natural product without all the chemicals that could make you sick. You can use this everywhere in your home and on your pets. It’s highly possible that you have the fleas outside in your yard that are just catching a ride on your pets or yourselves and coming right back into your home. If this is the case then you’ll need to treat the outside of your yard along with your home. You can use Wondercide Outdoor pest control. Using the two of these together inside and outside your home should eliminate the fleas and it’s life cycles almost immediately in your home. Be sure to spray everywhere in your home, including mattresses, furniture, floors including your carpets. Outdoors, spray everywhere your pets go especially dirt and sandy areas. I’m so sorry that your going through all of this!!

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. 🙂

  9. Stacey Childers

I used the hotshot bedbug and flea fogger after washing all linens, clothing, opening all drawers and closets, lifting and removing mattresses however the fleas are still very much prevalent in my home. I have treated my cats for fleas and am now at a loss as to what to do to get rid of them. Do you have any suggestions that could help?

    1. Hello Stacey, I would highly recommend Wondercide Home Spray. This kills fleas and all of it’s cycles on contact and is an all natural product that shouldn’t effect your cats health negatively. You can also purchase Wondercide For Pets which can be sprayed directly on them and any places that they sleep, play and eat.

If you have carpets in your home, spray the Wondercide directly on your carpets every other day until you no longer see any signs of the fleas, usually 2 weeks will kill them off. You can also spray this directly on your mattresses and furniture, lift the seat cushions and spray all areas of your couch and chairs.

If you have wood or tile floors your best bet is to use a steam cleaner on them and be sure to do this every other day as well until you see no signs of the fleas.

If you keep on top of this for a couple of weeks the fleas will be gone. It’s very important to continue these steps for a couple of weeks to be sure that you’ve killed all the fleas eggs and larvae in your home. Even if you don’t see them after a weeks time there can still be eggs in your home which will hatch and begin the entire cycle all over again.

While doing all of the above, don’t forget to vacuum every single day!!! This will suck up all of the dead and dying fleas. Make sure to empty the canister bag or wash a bag less canister after each use!

Please let me know how this all works for you! I know how much of a pain it can be to get rid of fleas and how annoying they can be in your home.

      Best of luck! Kimberly 🙂
